Long-time China scholar Bates Gill has been named executive director of the Center for China Analysis at the Asia Society Policy Institute, the Asia Society said on Wednesday.
“Bates has consistently delivered perceptive and balanced insights on China and Asian affairs,” said Asia Society CEO Kevin Rudd, who is also the center’s founding chair. “I am delighted he has joined us at such a critical time for understanding China’s role in an era of growing great power competition.”
Gill recently chaired the Department of Security Studies at Macquarie University in Sydney and was also the inaugural Scholar-in-Residence with the Asia Society Australia, the Asia Society said in a release. He is the author or editor of nine books on China- and Asia-related topics, including Daring to Struggle: China’s Global Ambitions under Xi Jinping published this year by Oxford University Press.
Gill was previously Freeman Chair in China Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the founding director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution.
The Asia Society was founded as a non-profit organization by John D. Rockefeller 3rd in 1956 with the mission to help connect Asia and the world.
