‘Barbie’ Earns 11 Grammy Nominations After Box Office Success

Topline

“Barbie” notched 11 Grammy nominations in seven categories Friday after a smashing success at the box office earlier this year, with the movie becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Key Facts

Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” featured in the film was nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year while Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” was nominated for Song of the Year.

Both those songs as well as Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” and “Barbie World” by Ice Spice and Nicki Minaj featuring Aqua will compete for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

“Barbie” also received Grammy nominations for Best Score Soundtrack and Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media.

“Barbie World” received another nomination for Best Rap Song and “What Was I Made For?” received a nomination for Pop Solo Performance.

Key Background

Over the summer, “Barbie” dominated theaters and captured the biggest opening of the year so far, bringing in $162 million during its first three days in theaters. Since it opened, “Barbie” has broken numerous records. “Barbie” had the biggest domestic opening ever for a non-superhero film or sequel. Greta Gerwig, the film’s director, earned the title of highest-grossing female director of all-time at the domestic box office. “Barbie” also went on to become Warner Bros.’ highest-grossing domestic release, surpassing “The Dark Knight. “Barbie” tells the live-action story of Mattel dolls Barbie and Ken. With an all-star cast — Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Michael Cera, Simu Liu, America Ferrera and Dua Lipa — and a pop soundtrack produced by Mark Ronson, the film’s release was long awaited by many. Its summer premiere, which coincided with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, became somewhat of a cultural phenomenon as some moviegoers saw both films in an offbeat double feature.

Surprising Fact

“Oppenheimer” will go head-to-head with “Barbie” in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category as composer Ludwig Göransson was nominated for the film.

Big Numbr

$1.44 billion. That’s how much money “Barbie” has grossed globally since it opened in theaters in mid-July, according to Box Office Mojo.
