Quarterbacks have dominated the Rookie of the Year Award discussion most years. That was the story in 2021 after five signal-callers—including each of the first three picks—came off the board within the top 15 selections.
All five of the Round 1 QBs were near the top of the odds table going into the 2021 season, but none of them managed to win the honors last year thanks to wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase’s breakout rookie season.
Despite Chase’s victory and although the 2022 draft only saw a single signal-caller taken within the first two rounds, a quarterback is again atop the list of favorites for this year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award.
Kenny Pickett is currently pacing the field of first-year talents with +700 odds to be the league’s OROY. The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Pickett at No. 20 overall, making him the only QB prospect to come off the board within the first 73 selections.
Although his odds suggest an impressive rookie season, Pickett isn’t even guaranteed to start in 2022. The 24-year-old needs to beat out free-agent pickup Mitchell Trubisky and incumbent backup Mason Rudolph to win a job left vacant by future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement.
Wide receivers were one of the main strengths of this draft class and it’s reflected in the Offensive Rookie of the Year odds, even if the position isn’t favored to win in back-to-back years. Five of seven players with the best odds of winning the award play the position, a testament to how many quality wideouts entered the league this year.
This group is headlined by Drake London, the prized Atlanta Falcons wideout who was the first receiver drafted in 2022. The Falcons selected London at No. 8 overall, kick-starting a run on WRs that culminated in a record-setting six coming off the board within the first 20 selections.
London (+800) will be a focal point in an Atlanta offense that direly needs help right now. The team has a lack of talent in its receiving corps after losing Calvin Ridley to a season-long suspension and Russell Gage signed elsewhere in free agency. Outside of second-year tight end Kyle Pitts, the Falcons have little in the way of talented pass-catchers.
Treylon Burks, Chris Olave and Christian Watson are slightly behind London at +1000, tying them for the fourth-best OROY odds in 2022.
Burks is set to fill the Tennessee Titans’ No. 1 WR vacancy left by the team’s decision to trade Pro Bowl wideout A.J. Brown during the draft. Olave should have a sizable role in the New Orleans Saints’ revamped passing offense, while few wideouts will have a better quarterback targeting them than Watson will as a teammate of Aaron Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers.
Running backs are well-represented in the Offensive Rookie of the Year race. Breece Hall, the projected lead back for the New York Jets, has the second-best odds on the board at +900. Seattle Seahawks rookie Kenneth Walker (+1300) and James Cook of the Buffalo Bills (+1600) are also in the top-10 leading into the 2022 NFL preseason.
