Multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors are reportedly cooperating with the Manhattan District Attorney, the latest in the weeks-long controversy for the Marvel actor who was charged with domestic violence in March (he maintains he is innocent).
Key Facts
Sources told Variety Wednesday multiple alleged abuse victims of Majors have come forward and are cooperating with authorities, weeks after Majors, 33, was arrested in New York on March 25 on charges of strangulation, assault and harassment of a 30-year-old woman who was treated for minor head and neck injuries at an area hospital.
The New York Police Department said in a statement officers responded to a 911 call in the Chelsea neighborhood around 11 a.m., and the woman had told police she was assaulted.
Following the arrest, a representative for Majors told the Associated Press Majors had done “nothing wrong,” and his attorney Priya Chaudry said he is “probably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows.”
Chaudry shared screenshots with TMZ showing alleged text messages between Majors and the woman, in which she states she’s “angry” that Majors, whom she calls her “partner,” was charged and claims she was at fault for trying to grab his phone during the altercation.
Majors’ rising star has taken a hit: He’s been dropped by talent agency Entertainment 360 and PR firm The Lede Company, Deadline reported Monday.
He’s also lost several film roles, including the upcoming film adaptation of Walter Mosley novel The Man in My Basement, which he was supposed to star in and executive produce, as well as an Otis Redding biopic.
Majors was also dropped from the Texas Rangers’ ad campaign, which was reportedly set to debut Friday, and the U.S. Army suspended an advertising campaign that he narrated.
Majors and fashion company Valentino “mutually agreed” he would no longer attend this year’s Met Gala, which will take place on May 1, as one of its guests, Deadline reported.
Surprising Fact
Deadline reported Monday there have been “zero conversations in the Marvel camp to drop Majors,” who is set to star as Kang the Conqueror in the upcoming second season of Loki, which has already been shot and is expected to release in summer 2023. He’s also attached to star in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, a 2025 release that has not yet started filming.
Key Background
Majors graduated from the Yale School of Drama with a Master of Fine Arts in acting in 2016 and landed his first part—a role in ABC series When We Rise—prior to graduating. He’s since starred in critically acclaimed films including The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, and he was nominated for an Emmy Award for lead actor in a drama series for HBO’s Lovecraft Country in 2021. Majors made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2021 in the Disney+ series Loki and reprised his role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in 2023. Prior to his arrest, many media outlets considered Majors to be among the fastest rising stars in Hollywood: In a February interview, NPR considered his rise to fame “meteoric,” and last summer, the New York Times called him “one of the most promising actors in Hollywood.”
Big Number
$746 million. That’s how much films released in 2023 starring Majors have made at the global box office. His top-grossing film this year is Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which grossed $212 million domestically and $474 million worldwide. His other big film, Creed III, made $155 million at the domestic box office and $271 million worldwide.
What To Watch For
Majors is scheduled to appear in court on May 8. Prosecutor David Henderson, who handles civil rights trials, told The Cut it’s too early to tell whether the case will go to trial, and “nothing significant” is likely to happen at the upcoming hearing.
