Disney’s sci-fi action film Tron: Ares is finally available to stream after premiering in theaters on Oct. 10. If you’re planning a movie night, keep reading to learn everything you need to know about buying or renting the sequel at home.
Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares is the third film in the sci-fi action franchise, following the 1982 original Tron and 2010’s sequel Tron: Legacy.
The next installment follows a highly sophisticated program named Ares, portrayed by Jared Leto, “who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings,” the synopsis reads. The film also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, and Gillian Anderson, with Jeff Bridges reprising his role as Kevin Flynn.
Tron: Ares underperformed at the box office, opening with a disappointing $32 million domestic debut and ultimately ending its theatrical run with $142 million worldwide. This is significantly lower than the movie’s reported $220 million production budget, according to Deadline.
Despite its poor box-office performance, audiences responded far more positively to the sequel. Tron: Ares currently holds an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics gave it a much lower 53%. Mashable’s film critic Kristy Puchko wrote that the movie “is heavy-handed, dunderheaded, and over earnest, but also occasionally funny, charming, sexy, and thrilling.”
