s76 years young and Elton John is still going strong. This year, the pop-rock legend is continuing his final tour – Farewell Yellow Brick Road and this summer will be stepping onto the hallowed Glastonbury stage for the closing night of this iconic festival.
Glastonbury co-organiser, Emily Eavis, described landing Sir Elton as “a massive. massive coop” surely knowing that the potential set-list will contain back-to-back hit songs that transcend geography and generations.
And where there is live music, there is, of course, the merchandise. As one might expect of a Knight of the Realm, instead of trestle table laden with cheap Tees at eye-watering prices, Sir Elton has the most prestigious of locations for his ‘merch.’
Cue luxury London department store, Selfridges with an Elton John takeover of its Corner Shop concept which was launched this week in time for the artist’s birthday.
The curated space has been designed to reflect Elton John’s celebrated career with archive material. memorabilia and of course some of the iconic stage looks from a career that has spanned six decades.
“I’m truly excited to see what the Selfridges Corner Shop experience looks like now it’s being brought to life. We’ve been working closely with the teams at Selfridges and Bravado to create a unique experience that allows my fans to take a step into my world.
“I’m an avid shopper, so the bar has been set high and we’ve come up with something special that celebrates the things I love – fashion, vinyl, live music, food and some beautiful design. I hope my fans love it as much as I do.”
From the acid green/pink polka patterned silk-twill jacket from Richard James at £1995.00 to the More Joy “I’m Still Standing” organic-cotton t-shirt at £45.00, there is a broad offer of goods for the avid Elton Joh fans.
As typical for Selfridges, this goes beyond simply a shopping opportunity. The area has been created as an attraction with original Elton John tour outfits and of course a grand piano. Huge prints are on display which include images of stand-out moments from
Elton John’s illustrious career. The tour costumes include the designer-tailor Nudie Cohn’s rhinestone suit and Annie Reavey & Bill Whitten’s Workroom 27 outfits.
Other collaborations in the collection which is also available online, include Leblon Deliennne, Charbonnel et Walker, Cent.Ldn and the British pedigree in nightwear, Dereck Rose.
One hundred signed copies of the forthcoming launch of a 50th Anniversary Edition of Honky Château (1972) will be available for lucky fans.
The Elton John dedicated instillation will also host a series of events including talks, signings and live music performances throughout its duration until May 8.
