Andrew Tate Leaves Jail For House Arrest After Human Trafficking Charges

Topline

Andrew Tate, internet star and self-proclaimed misogynist, won an appeal Friday to replace his detention with house arrest, after spending months in a Romanian jail on charges of human trafficking, organized crime and rape, the Associated Press reported.

Key Facts

Tate appealed a decision from a judge last week to extend his arrest for a fourth time; this time however, the Bucharest Court of Appeal ruled in favor of Tate’s appeal, allowing him to serve a 30 day sentence under home arrest, Ramona Bolla, a spokesperson for DIICOT, Romania’s anti-organized crime agency, told the AP.

The internet personality, along with his brother Tristan, both British citizens, and two Romanian women who were all arrested together in December, won the appeal and all four will be under house arrest until April 29, Bolla told the AP.

None of the four suspects have been formally charged, NBC News reported.

Key Background

Romanian authorities began their investigation into Tate, 36, in April 2022, after he was accused of holding two women, including an American citizen, captive. Tate was detained months later in Bucharest, Romania. He was initially detained on human trafficking charges and at the time, six victims were identified, news outlets reported. His victims were allegedly subjected to “acts of physical violence and mental coercion,” DIICOT said in a statement, multiple news outlets reported. Every 30 days, from the end of December until Friday, the court has extended the 30-day sentence of Tate for an additional 30 days. Each time Tate has appealed the decision and each time, until Friday, the judge has denied the request. Tate is known for his professional kickboxing career as well as his social media presence, which features sexist commentary and hate speech. Some of his remarks have gotten him in trouble and led to his removal from social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

What To Watch For

Tate and his co-conspirators will return to the Bucharest Court of Appeal April 29 to hear if their house arrest is extended.

Big Number

5.4 million. That’s how many Twitter followers Tate has. Elon Musk reinstated his account in November, after a five year ban.
