As part of the many, many breaking news items out of Star Wars Celebration in London, we have what I would consider the first bit of unequivocally bad news, that season 2 of Andor, the final season, has a release date that is ages away.
It’s been announced by the trio of Tony Gilroy, Diego Luna and Andy Serkis that after beginning to shoot this past November, shooting which will run through August, they will spend a year in post making the release date of season 2 of Andor not until August of 2024.
They did have at least some clips to share from season 2. There were not a ton of teases but given the events of Rogue One, it’s pretty clear where we’re headed. “You know where we’re going. You saw that Death Star blow up. We make that happen,” Gilroy said.
Andor was released on September 21, 2022, so an August 2024 release date would mean nearly two years in between seasons. It’s certainly not unheard of in this age of big, big budget television, but it means we’ll have quite a few Star Wars projects in between now and then. We may even get another Mandalorian season in the interim, plus things like Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew and perhaps The Acolyte, depending on when it’s released. We don’t know when the just-announced Rey Star Wars movie is coming, but my guess would be after August 2024. Not that it really matters, because Andor is completely its own thing in its pre-A New Hope timeline that really only lines up with Obi-Wan, a bit.
Andor is generally considered the singular best Star Wars project Disney has done in their new Star Wars era. And given that I’d consider Rogue One the best film, I suppose that’s not the biggest of surprises. It has a completely different tone, and a wildly more serious script and performances than most other Star Wars projects. It may be missing the “fun factor” of some other blockbuster projects, or adorable puppets, but it’s just so, so good it doesn’t matter.
Though it is rough that we have to wait almost two full years for season 2, of course I think we want to give the show however long it needs in order to produce a final product that’s as good as the first. It’s also nice to have a show with a fixed conclusion already in place in the form of Rogue One, which serves as a sort of series finale that we’ve already seen. More to come over the next year, no doubt.
