The Boys
The Boys only has one more season left to go, and according to social media, it appears filming has now wrapped for season 5. That’s good news on its own, I suppose, but in the context of when season 5’s release date will actually arrive, that’s a different matter entirely.
We can use season 4 to judge the distance between filming wrapping on a season and its release. In that case, filming on The Boys season 4 ended on April 12, 2023. Then, the season aired on June 13, 2024, meaning that post-production took 14 months after filming until season 4 actually aired.
Doing that math, 14 months from today would be August 2026. That would be over two years since season 4 aired, yet another giant gap in the streaming era, though I guess these days we have to be thankful when things aren’t three years, sadly.
However, the benefit of giving your shows spin-off series is that you have something to fill the time. In this case, that would be the release of Gen V season 2, which will air on September 17, 2025. Given that I liked Gen V season 1 better than recent entries of The Boys, I’m genuinely looking forward to that. I’m not clear on what the status of another spin-off, The Boys: Mexico, currently is or when it’s going to change its name from that. There’s one more past that, Vought Rising, a prequel series. Amazon is not letting this go just because the main series ends, Walking Dead style. But at least Gen V has been no Fear the Walking Dead to start with here.
The Boys
The Boys has gotten additional attention as of late after the election of Donald Trump for a second term. While The Boys has always been a political parody, it’s gotten more pronounced the last few years with some literal 1:1 moments from real life. Social media for the show reacts quickly to real events for promotion (most recently, The Deep was used for a DOGE/Elon Musk parody).
Homelander’s Antony Starr has recently commented that he’s glad the series is ending as he doesn’t want the series to not go out on top:
“It’s strange because as much as I love the show, I don’t like seeing things outstay their welcome, so I’m kind of glad we’re finishing at five,” he said. “That said, I love the show and the characters, so it’s a bittersweet moment.”
While it does seem extremely likely Homelander will not survive the finale, it remains to be seen whether he could possibly show up in a spin-off if events are taking place in the past. But unfortunately, we are going to need to wait more than a year until we figure out how season 5 will end.
