Topline
Robert Crimo III—the 21-year-old accused of fatally shooting seven people and wounding dozens at a Chicago-area Fourth of July parade—was indicted Wednesday on 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 attempted murder counts and 48 battery counts.
Key Facts
An Illinois grand jury issued 117 indictments for Crimo, who police say confessed to opening fire at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois.
He was charged with 21 counts of first-degree murder, or three for each of the seven people he was accused of killing, according to county court records.
Because a total 48 people were impacted by this act of gun violence, Crimo received 48 counts of battery and attempted murder.
KEY BACKGROUND
Crimo is believed to have spent weeks planning the Independence Day attack, where police say he used a high-powered AR-15 to shoot dozens of people from a rooftop before fleeing disguised as a woman. After an eight-hour search, police took Crimo into custody and said he confessed to the crimes during interrogation. The victims who died range from 35 to 69 years of age, and those injured range from 8 to 80, with the 8-year-old paralyzed from the waist down.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Crimo’s next court appearance is on August 3. Prosecutors say Crimo could face a life sentence for the murder counts.
