All The Best Movie And TV Trailers From San Diego Comic-Con 2022

San Diego Comic-Con 2022 has come and gone and I had a blast attending my first-ever SDCC (I’ve been to other, smaller Comic-Cons but this was my first International gathering of nerds).

During the show, companies like Marvel and DC, HBO and NetflixNFLX
all showed off trailers; invited attendees to wander through elaborate installations; and hosted panels of creators, actors and composers to talk about what’s coming in the world of comics, movies and TV (and some games, too).

Along with the trailers below, I saw episodes of TV that haven’t aired yet, a Severance blooper reel that mostly featured Patricia Arquette making adorable flubs, and attended the first comic-book panel that’s taken place in Hall H in many a long year. I also moderated a panel for the first time, which was an exciting new experience.

In any case, let’s take a look at all the best trailers that were shown during SDCC 2022. Some of these are definitely better than others, but they’re all worth checking out.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Trailer

I’ll give Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves my SDCC 2022 Trailer Of The Year award not because it looks like the best movie on this list, but because it’s such a pleasant surprise. When I first heard there would be a new D&D movie coming out I was nonplussed. I figured it would be just another horrible adaptation of something its creators knew nothing about.

This trailer changed my mind completely. This actually looks like a love-letter to D&D from people who are very familiar with things like Owlbears and the baked-in humor any tabletop gaming session evokes in its players.

Judging by the response I got when I posted about this on my Facebook page, I’m not alone!

The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power Trailer

As I’ve mentioned before, I haven’t had a lot of faith in Amazon’sAMZN
billion-dollar adaptation of Lord Of The Rings’s appendices (or those of Tolkien’s Silmarillion). But this Comic-Con trailer is simply spectacular. Maybe the show won’t really be the story Tolkien would have told. Maybe it will be embellished and changed beyond recognition. But maybe it will also be very good. This certainly looks terrific. For the first time since The Rings of Power was announced, I am pretty hyped about it.

“There can be no trust between hammer and rock. Eventually one or the other must surely break” is also a terrific line and gives me faith that there’s some care going into this show’s script and not just its CGI budget.

House Of The Dragon Trailer

Definitely one of my most highly-anticipated shows of the year, House Of The Dragon is the long-awaited prequel to Game Of Thrones. This extended Comic-Con trailer is simply outstanding, introducing us to a world of intrigue and kingly succession that promises blood and fire . . . and dragons.

I’m not sure that this will ever reach the same level of universal popularity that the original saw—the competition is simply so much stiffer now—but I honestly think it looks just as good. Perhaps even more steeped in political intrigue and skullduggery than the original show. The fact that Miguel Sapochnik is co-showrunning is also a big deal for me. Spochnik directed some of the best episodes in the entire run of Game Of Thrones and I have a lot of respect for his talent.

This one lands on August 21st on HBO and I will be reviewing each episode here on this blog, so please do follow!

The Dragon Prince Season 4 Intro Clip

Not a trailer, but something even better for fans of Wonderstorm’s The Dragon Prince: The first couple minutes of Season 4’s season premiere, which doesn’t land on Netflix until November! It shows off where some of the characters are at and a surprise time-jump. This was a fun panel, and I also moderated a separate Wonderstorm panel where the show’s creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond showed off their new original IP, Bonders which I’ll have more on soon.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trailer

This was a powerful trailer in large part because it reminds us that the wonderful star of the last movie, Chadwick Boseman, died after a secret fight against cancer. But it’s also a damn fine trailer in its own right, and gives us our first look at Wakanda under the rule of T’Challa’s little sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright). The Bob Marley track helps pack that emotional punch.

John Wick 4 Trailer

Keanu Reeves showed up as a surprise guest during a panel of directors in Comic-Con’s Hall H (right after a panel I attended where he talked about his comic-book BRZRKR) and they showed this very action-packed teaser trailer for John Wick 4. It looks like . . . everything I’d want in a John Wick movie, but with more swords. Swords are cool!

The Sandman Trailer

So, I’m about to start reading these comic books by Neil Gaiman—finally!—because The Sandman hits Netflix on August 5th and I’d like to have a better sense of the original material when I write about this. I will say, as a newcomer to this bizarre looking fantasy this trailer looks pretty damn good. Whether it’s a faithful adaptation, however, remains to be seen. And what a cast!

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods Trailer

Shazam! was kind of a dumb movie but I really enjoyed it for the most part. The end was a little weak, but Shazam (Zachary Levi) is a lovable character and I thought the movie did a good job blending the goofy and emotional stuff. It was just maybe a little too long. This looks like more of the same, which is fine.

Black Adam Sneak Peak

Still not sure what to make of this, but I prefer this trailer to the previous one. I really hope it’s great, because I do love The Rock and he’s perfect for the role. I like that he’s getting a slightly less lovable heroic role this time around. We’ll see how far they take the anti-hero stuff. Also, Doctor Fate! Pierce Brosnan is an interesting choice here. I can dig it.

Marvel’s I Am Groot Official Trailer Trailer

Groot is an adorable Marvel superhero and this looks like an adorable little animated series of short films, which is a cool approach to take. This one comes out soon, too: August 10th.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Trailer

I’m far from sold on She-Hulk as a Disney+ show. Then again, I’m feeling a little burned out on the constant cavalcade of MCU shows in general. This looks fine. It has Tim Roth, which is good. I guess I’ve always been a bit skeptical about She-Hulk as a character. Or maybe I just think it’s better to have unique superheroes who aren’t just the female version of male superheroes. Whatever, it looks better than I thought it would. Daredevil is in there. The fourth wall gets broken from time to time. I could see this being enjoyable.

Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire Trailer

Interview With A Vampire was first adapted into what has become a classic 90s’ movie starring Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Antonio Banderas and a very young, very creepy Kirsten Dunst. I like Pitt but he phoned it in badly (especially compared to Cruise’s phenomenal performance).

In AMC’s TV adaptation, Game Of Thrones alum Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm) takes on Pitt’s role and judging from this trailer he really knocks it out of the park. This actually looks quite good and it’ll be nice to see an updated version as the movie’s age really shows now. We’ll also get more of Anne Rice’s books in future seasons if this does well, so that’s cool.
