Erik Ten Hag is still figuring things out at Manchester United. While the Dutch coach has achieved some early success in changing the culture and style of play at Old Trafford, he has yet to get to grips with his squad, particularly in the attacking third where United have used a number of different options this season.
Alejandro Garnacho was the latest attacker given an opportunity to impress for Manchester United in their 3-0 Europa League victory over Sheriff Tiraspol and the teenager caught the eye even if failed to find the back of the net with one of the many goal-scoring chances he was presented with.
There has been much excitement about the talent of Garnacho in 2022 with the attacker called up to the senior Argentina national team squad before he had even made his first start for Manchester United. Many expect the 18-year-old to become a key figure at the top of the European game over the course of his career.
Garnacho demonstrated his ability in the win over Sheriff Tiraspol. He was quick to take on his man and opened up space in the attacking third in a way few other United players did on the night. Garnacho also grew in confidence as the match progressed and came close to scoring not long before he was ultimately substituted off.
“I think it was a good performance from him [Garnacho]; he did what I expected him to do,” Ten Hag explained after the match. “First, he deserves a chance from the last weeks. The start was difficult for him, I was not happy with him but the last weeks I was happy with him, he had a better attitude, more resilience and determination.
“You see his talent to deal with the ball in tight areas, to run behind and he can take players on. That’s a good capability, especially against opponents who are defending compact like this opponent. I am happy with that and I hope this is a stimulant for him, the first game, that he knows ‘I have to do better’ to get into the team. But don’t forget you are playing in a team.”
Ten Hag knows how to handle young players. He earned himself a reputation for bringing through youth during his time as Ajax manager and he is now in charge of another club with a long and strong track record of providing a pathway between the academy and the first team. Garnacho is the latest younger to walk that route.
United’s attack is talented, but between Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial they have yet to find the right formula. Garnacho could make himself a part of the equation if he remains focussed and committed to proving himself to Ten Hag. The teenager teased his ability on Thursday and many are counting on there being much more to come.
