While the 2022 Golden Globes weren’t televised, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association still nominated performances and titles and then bestowed prizes upon those talents they deemed the best of the year. The winners were announced without fanfare on social media, with those who were up for the honors learned that they had won (or not) at the same time and in the same way the rest of the world did. The Globes are often thought of as an indicator of what Hollywood is thinking, and there is usually a fair amount of overlap between the early awards and the Oscars.
Now, it seems like there is a clear frontrunner for the Best Original Song Oscar, and she’s one of the youngest potential winners ever.
Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won the coveted Best Original Song category for their tune “No Time to Die,” which was written and recorded for the James Bond film of the same name. The cut was expected to be a serious contender, and the fact that the two artists ended up on top wasn’t exactly shocking. Now, it appears the cut is not just certain to be nominated for an Academy Award in the same vertical, but it looks like the siblings might be gearing up for a win.
“No Time to Die” was applauded by critics when it first arrived, and it became a hit all around the world. The tune was released in February 2020, ahead of the original premiere date of No Time to Die. Sadly, the movie was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but that hasn’t seemed to hurt Eilish and Finneas or their chances at winning awards for their work. The track was also named the champion in the Best Song Written for Visual Media category at the 2021 Grammys.
With a Grammy and a Golden Globe won, “No Time to Die” is likely the track to beat for Best Original Song at the upcoming Academy Awards. The nominees for the ninety-fourth ceremony won’t be announced for weeks, and there are several other tunes that are sure to make a real play for the prize, but the brother and sister duo now have an edge over the competition.
Eilish and Finneas had to beat out singles by the likes of Van Morrison (“Down to Joy” from Belfast), Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Dos Oruguitas” from Encanto), Jennifer Hudson, Carole King and Jamie Hartmann (“Here I Am [Singing My Way Home]” from Respect) and Beyoncé and Dixson (“Be Alive” from King Richard) for the Golden Globe, and many, if not all of those will probably compete for the Oscar as well.
It looks like Best Original Song will be a category packed with well-known names at the 2022 Academy Awards, but can any of them beat Eilish and her brother?
