AEW Dynamite Grand Slam Ratings Down 12% Amid $1 Million Gate

AEW Dynamite viewership stayed over one million viewers Wednesday for AEW Grand Slam with 1.039 million total viewers. This number is down 12% from last week. AEW’s 18-49 rating also saw a decrease with a 0.35 rating compared to last week’s 0.39. Last year’s AEW Dynamite Grand Slam drew 1.273 million viewers with a 0.48 in 18-49. Despite the disappointing number for one of its biggest TV shows of the year, Dynamite was No. 1 on cable and this marked the fifth consecutive week AEW Dynamite scored one million or more viewers.

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam saw the debut of Saraya—formerly known as Paige—and two new champions. Jon Moxley regained the AEW World Championship with a win over Bryan Danielson, while The Acclaimed dethroned Swerve in our Glory in the night’s real main event.

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam emanated from Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, N.Y. Despite a considerably smaller crowd—of just over 12,000 fans that didn’t even come close to selling out the venue compared to approximately 20,000 fans last year—AEW Dynamite Grand Slam became AEW’s first television broadcast to draw a $1 million gate. The fact that AEW accomplished this feat without CM Punk has to be vindicating to Tony Khan, who took credit for AEW’s first $1 million house during his now-infamous meltdown after AEW All Out.

“When somebody [Hangman Adam Page] who hasn’t done a damn thing in this business jeopardizes the first million-dollar house that this company has ever drawn off of my back and goes on national television and does that, it’s a disgrace to this industry. It’s a disgrace to this company,” said Punk during his fiery rant. Punk is reportedly not expected back in AEW as a buyout of his contract is likely.

Despite being plagued by turmoil, questionable leadership and a recent surge in momentum during WWE’s Triple H Era, AEW Dynamite has rebounded solidly in viewership. With an eventful September coming to a close, October will also feature multiple big shows. AEW Dynamite is set to make its debut in Toronto on October 12, then the following week, Dynamite will go head-to-head with WWE NXT on Tuesday, October 18 due to a pre-emption. AEW President Tony Khan wasted little time booking the show once AEW Grand Slam went off the air.

“At this year’s first Tuesday night Dynamite, October 18th, in Cincinnati, Ohio, The winner of the Grand Slam Golden Ticket Battle Royal will get a shot at the first-ever three-time AEW World Champion, Jon Moxley, if he is still the champion on that Tuesday,” said Khan.

Tuesday’s WWE NXT is also set to be the go-home show for NXT TakeOver: Halloween Havoc.
