AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2022 Results: Winners, News And Notes

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam featured five matches including Bryan Danielson vs. Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship and the real main event of The Acclaimed vs. Swerve in Our Glory for the AEW World Tag Team Championship.

Tony Khan has gone full Twitter Fingers during the run up to Grand Slam, taking shots at WWE for this week’s low Raw viewership against Monday Night Football and also criticizing its relationship with Saudi Arabia.

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam also saw the arrival of Saraya, formerly known as Paige, who was subject of return rumors as both WWE and AEW reportedly showed interest. Saraya saved Athena and Toni Storm from a beatdown at the hands of Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter and Serena Deeb. Saraya will be a welcomed addition to an AEW women’s division that, despite not being short on talent, has gone ice cold.

Last week’s broadcast of AEW Dynamite was up big with 1.175 million viewers.

AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2022 Winners and Highlights

Chris Jericho def. Claudio Castagnoli

Chris Jericho couldn’t help but default to 100% babyface as over 12,000 fans in Arthur Ashe Stadium sang his theme music.

Grand Slam featured very impressive crowd shots throughout the large stadium.

Former ROH owner Cary Silkin was ringside for this match. This later led to a clumsy exchange between Jericho, Silkin and Castagnoli where Jericho used Silkin as a shield.

Chris Jericho surprisingly adhered to the code of honor by shaking Claudio Castagnoli’s hand, but then he promptly slapped Castagnoli.

This was a great opener. Fans popped huge for Jericho’s big win and it feels more like the Ring of Honor Championship won Chris Jericho rather than the other way around.

The Acclaimed def. Swerve in our Glory

Fabolous accompanied Swerve in our Glory to the ring. Sadly, he did not battle Max Caster.

Keith Lee hit an impressive hurricanrana early in the match to the delight of Arthur Ashe Stadium. He followed up with a moonsault from the second rope.

There was a strange spot where Max Caster went for the Mic Drop elbow but landed on his leg and began selling his knee. It may or may not have been a planned spot but Caster was able to continue the match. Caster later hit the Mic Drop for the big win.

Swerve Strickland accidentally hit Keith Lee with the boombox as the teases for their inevitable feud continues.

MJF Faces off with Wheeler Yuta

MJF cut off Wheeler Yuta and the shift in energy and charisma couldn’t be any more apparent.

MJF embraced the cheers he received from this New York crowd while also insulting them by saying he would never sleep with any of their wives.

MJF (and AEW) didn’t even pretend that Wheeler Yuta has a personality, and neither did this giant crowd.

Wheeler Yuta made a reference to MJF’s engagement while MJF clapped back by mocking William Regal’s pill popping.

Diamante’s backup this Friday is none other than the Goddess Trina.

Pac def. Orange Cassidy

Throughout the match, Orange Cassidy was mixing his signature comedy spots with more intense, hard-hitting moves since the story going into this match was Pac not taking Cassidy seriously as a wrestler.

Nobody in the wrestling business takes DDTs like Pac and he went out of his way to prove that tonight.

This was the third match in a row where a weapon was used and the referee was helpless to stop it.

Toni Storm def. Britt Baker, Athena and Serena Deeb; Saraya (Paige) Debuts

Poor Taz had to put over the refs as “doing a great job” despite all the “sketchy stuff” people keep getting away with.

This women’s division is ice cold. Outside of Britt Baker, nobody really received a big ovation, and despite working their asses off, fan reaction was lukewarm at best.

Fans finally came alive when Athena did the Top Dolla double fallaway slam spot with Serena Deeb and Britt Baker. Athena’s back landed on poor Baker’s face and Baker suffered a bloody nose.

Jamie Hayter and Britt Baker reunited before beating down Toni Storm. This gave way to the surprise debut of Saraya, and if this ice-cold women’s division could use anything it’s the artist formerly known as Paige.

Jon Moxley def. Bryan Danielson

An interesting note used to promote this match was that Bryan Danielson had avenged every one of his losses in AEW except for his loss to Jon Moxley.

MJF watched from a skybox while holding his Casino Battle Royale chip and was featured throughout this match. It feels more and more like MJF will cash in his chip using Money in the Bank rules.

There were so many shots of MJF during this match, it was basically a Triple Threat.

Jon Moxley surprisingly delivered a curb stomp (to the achilles) in this match before hitting the Death Rider, which Bryan Danielson kicked out of. Moxley eventually won with a rear-naked choke.
