Advisors Warning Trump Winning Election May Be Only Way To Avoid Jail Time

Advisors to former President Donald Trump have told him the only way he can avoid facing jail time is to win the 2024 presidential election, according to sources who’ve spoken to New York Times

reporter Maggie Haberman. “His advisors, in private conversations, have been pretty blunt,” Haberman said Wednesday on CNN This Morning. “They see it as he has to win the election and that is how he guarantees that he does not face jail time.”

“The fact that they are looking to an election to the highest office in the land as some kind of insurance policy or an out for him really affects or colors the entire presidential race,” Haberman said.

On Tuesday, Trump revealed that federal prosecutors had sent him a “target letter” warning him that he could be indicted in relation to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. “Deranged Jack Smith, the prosecutor with Joe Biden’s DOJ, sent a letter stating that I am a TARGET of the January 6th Grand Jury investigation,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “giving me a very short 4 days to report to the Grand Jury, which almost always means an Arrest and Indictment.”

Trump told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity that he got the letter Sunday, and accused prosecutors of being “in a rush because they want to interfere…it’s interference in the election.”

“Trump himself is quite bothered by this,” said CNN’s Kaitlan Collins Wednesday morning. “I think what Trump is trying to do is control the political aspect of this…he’s calling his allies on Capitol Hill” and asking them to go on offense and defend him against the government’s prosecution.

In the town hall session with the former president Tuesday night, Trump repeated his claim that he could end Russia’s war with Ukraine in just 24 hours. “I get along very well with Putin,” he said. “I would tell Putin ‘gotta settle,’ I would tell Zelensky ‘ya gotta settle’” and he would “get a settlement in 24 hours.”
