ABC, not surprisingly, has greenlit freshman sitcom Abbott Elementary for a second season following the overall early critic accolades. Created by Qunita Brunson and shot in mockumentary style (a la The Office), the half-hour sitcom follows the daily doings at the fictional Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia as a documentary crew is recording a feature on underfunded schools.
Abbott Elementary stars Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, a substitute teacher who develops a crush on second grade teacher Janine (Qunita Brunson); Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, a second grade teacher with questionable connections; Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill, an awkward history teacher who supports Janine and her mission; and Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, a religious kindergarten teacher whom Janine looks up to. William Stanford Davis recurs as Mr. Johnson, the school’s eccentric custodian.
The network has not confirmed the number of new episodes ordered. Season one of Abbott Elementary consisted of 11 half-hour episodes (which concludes for the season on Tuesday, March 29).
Abbott Elementary marks ABC’s first comedy renewal for the 2022-23 broadcast season. Dramas Grey’s Anatomy and spin-off Station 19 were previously confirmed to return.
