The Golden Globe Awards returned to airways for the first time since 2021 on Tuesday, and TV shows Abbott Elementary and House Of The Dragon, and movies The Banshees Of Inisherin and The Fabelmans took home the night’s biggest prizes, offering a possible barometer for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Key Facts
Comedian Jerrod Charmichael hosted and opened the show by acknowledging the controversy surrounding it, joking he was chosen to host because he’s Black, and saying the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the ceremony, didn’t have any Black members “until George Floyd” died.
Angela Bassett (winner, Best Actress In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture) became the first actor to win an individual Globe award for a movie based on a Marvel comic, for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Key Background
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has faced controversy in recent years. A 2021 Los Angeles Times expose revealed the organization had no Black members among its ranks, and alleged that some voters had received gifts from productions. Some celebrities and studios criticized the awards ceremony, and NBC ultimately decided it would not air the production for one year while the HFPA made changes. The 2022 ceremony aired online with minimal flair. The HFPA has since added over 100 new voters and hired a diversity officer. Helen Hoehne, president of the HFPA, told Reuters that “very few” nominees were not planning on attending the ceremony—though actor Brendan Fraser has said he would not attend the show, after he previously accused a former president of the HFPA of groping him.
