We are still pretty far off from the return of Squid Game for season 2, we will probably get Netflix’s reality show version first. According to a new interview with THR, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk says that Netflix’s crew has asked him for his set designs so they can make the non-lethal competition as true to the series as possible. He dismisses the irony of Netflix making an actual Squid Game show where people win money, when the original had a firm anti-capitalist message by saying:
“The reason I created the show was to convey this message, but at the same time, I also wanted to be successful; I wanted to make money. I think it’s just normal that we have this business happening around Squid Game, because we live in a capitalistic society. There has been a lot of investment put into this show, and the reason is to make money out of it. So, in a competitive and capitalistic world, I think these businesses happening is just natural.”
I…very much respect that honestly. But that’s not what we’re here for. We want some Squid Game season 2 information, and we have a bit about the timing and what’s coming next.
Hwang Dong-hyuk says he has a deadline to finish writing Squid Game season 2 by the end of this year, or the beginning of next year. I’m not sure whether this is a self-imposed deadline, or something that Netflix is demanding based on their renewal deal. Regardless, it tracks with the idea that Squid Game season 2 will probably arrive in late 2023 or early 2024, as he’s previously said. I would lean toward later.
He was also asked about the content of season 2 itself, and he said he wanted to make sure that he did not just make it a “response” the reactions he’s read about the first season:
“I’ve seen many reactions from people about the show, but I don’t want to make season two as a response to those reactions. The philosophies I put in season one all naturally extend to season two. Instead of trying to meet the expectations of viewers, I just thought about the last moment when Gi-hun turned away from boarding the plane, and I thought about what he will do next. There will naturally be a flow of events that will lead all the way to the end of the season. I can’t share any details yet, but you know that Seong Gi-hun has become a totally new person by the end of season one, so season two is going to be about what that new Gi-hun is going to do and how things will unfold with this new kind of character.”
Many people were down on Gi-hun for ditching his daughter to go seek revenge on the founders of Squid Game by getting on the plane, but that will no doubt make for a more interesting season 2. I doubt he’ll be a player, but with all that money, what kind of power can he wield now?
