While the Stranger Things team did not seem to remotely care about its enormous gaps between seasons, ending in its season 5 finale, which took three years to arrive, not so of the Wednesday squad.
After nearly a three-year wait between seasons 1 and 2 of Wednesday, the goal now is to avoid that gap, particularly for a series that is not some sort of spectacular blockbuster production. Now, new information indicates when the Wednesday season 3 release date is likely to be, and there is really only one main option.
Previously, it was said that production on Wednesday season 2 would begin in November 2025, just two months after season 2 aired, and wildly shorter than the year-and-a-half gap delay from season 1 to when filming began on season 2. Then, for season 2, it took another year and three months of production for the August 2025 release. So, a nearly three-year gap.
However, that November start date for Wednesday season 3 has reportedly been pushed to February 2026. Then, we have two supposed dates for the end of that production. One report says the production end date is scheduled for May 2026, just three months later. But casting calls indicate it’s more likely to be nine months instead.
Nine months after a May 2026 wrap would be a February 2027 release date for Wednesday, about a year from now. So, in total, that would be a year and six months, about half the time between the first two seasons. That’s about as good as you’re going to get for a show like this, so mission accomplished. If it hits these marks, that is.
Netflix needs to focus relentlessly on Wednesday from here. Stranger Things and Squid Game both ended in 2025, with two of their biggest series ever, and few have come close to matching them. The only one that does so, and actually surpassed Stranger Things, has been Wednesday. Wednesday season 1 has the most views of any English-language Netflix show by a wide margin. Wednesday season 2 is not far behind, #5 on the all-time top 10 list. It likely would have been higher had the second season not taken so long to arrive. The only new show in this realm at all is Adolescence, a miniseries, which will somehow twist itself to return for a second season, but we don’t know when. A new test will be Bridgerton season 5 later this year, though season 4 didn’t make the top 10 list at all.
Wednesday has the benefit of continuing on indefinitely with no source material to run out of, but Jenna Ortega is frequently darting off for movie projects, and we don’t know when she might run out of steam for the role. But yes, season 3 should be Netflix’s #1 priority right now.
