Squid Game returns to Netflix this year, though there will be no murders this time around.
That’s because Squid Game: The Challenge is a reality show spinoff of the hit Korean dystopian drama where 456 contestants compete in various non-lethal games to win a grand total of $4.56 million.
The show met with some controversy earlier this year when some contestants reported less-than-stellar conditions at some of the games, which I find kind of funny given the nature of the show in question. Hey at least they aren’t murdering you for losing a game of marbles!
Netflix revealed that the show is coming out this November, though didn’t give a specific date. That’s two years after Squid Game blew everyone’s collective minds back in 2021, quickly becoming one of Netflix’s biggest hits.
I thought Squid Game was a terrific show with some very, very big problems holding it back from greatness. I’m not sure how to feel about a Season 2. This is one of the rare instances where Netflix actually renews a show that deserves to be renewed but maybe shouldn’t be since the story—aside from the very, very end—was wrapped up nicely. Any new season risks feeling redundant and derivative, and maybe a little forced.
Hopefully I’m proved wrong!
I’m less interested in Squid Game: The Challenge simply because, well, how can it possibly compete with such a cruel and violent TV series? I’ll definitely tune in, but I’m keeping my expectations in check.
