Big changes are coming to Warzone 2 next month. After weeks of complaints from the Call Of Duty community, one of the most irritating changes from the original Warzone is finally being overhauled.
In the original Warzone, players who were killed in combat got one extra chance to drop into the battle royale. Players were entered into the Gulag, a 1 vs 1 contest where the winner was returned to the match and the loser was out for good. This was based on the 2 vs 2 Gunfight mode introduced in Modern Warfare 2019.
In Warzone 2, the 1v1 Gulag was replaced with 2v2. Players are teamed up either with another fallen teammate, or with a random stranger and had to defeat the other 2-player team. But instead of being able to capture a flag to win, players had to defeat the other team or the super powerful Jailer NPC who enters the Gulag near the end of a fight. If neither team is eliminated, the match ends and all players are kicked out of the match. Alternatively, players could team up and kill the Jailer and all four players would return to the match.
In theory, this is a cool system. In practice, it’s mostly just very frustrating. Playing with randoms, losing because of the Jailer . . . it’s just not as fun as the original Gulag, and for those of us who miss Gunfight mode it fails to scratch that itch as well.
Thankfully, Infinity Ward and Raven Software have been listening to the player-base, and 1v1 Gulag returns in Season 2, which has been delayed until February 15th. It’s unclear if the Jailer is being removed from the Gulag as well or if players will still need to contend with the NPC. Hopefully he’s being replaced by a flag.
This is a good change, as is the return of Resurgence mode, but I’m still hoping that Infinity Ward adds Gunfight back to multiplayer. It was such a terrific new mode and it’s frankly criminal that it hasn’t made its way to Modern Warfare II yet.
