What if the job market was so tough, you had to die to finally land a job? That’s what happens to the character Choi Joon-woong, played by Rowoon, in the Korean fantasy drama Tomorrow. Joon-woong has been on so many unsuccessful job interviews he’s almost given up hope.
An accident that lands him in a coma turns out to be just the reset his employment record needs. While he is in a coma his spirit is recruited by Gu Ryeon, played by Kim Hee-sun, a supernatural being, who saves hopeless souls from committing suicide. It’s a temporary gig for Joon-woong, but it might be rewarding.
Joon-woong is understandably nervous when told to tag along with the pink haired Gu Ryeon, as it involves going through doors that look suspiciously like coffins. He’s assigned to Gu Ryeon’s afterlife Risk Management Team which also includes Im Ryoong-Koo, played by Yun Ji-on. They must succeed in their soul-saving mission or it’s the train back to hell for Gu Ryeon. It’s going to take Joon-woong a while to figure out when it’s okay to interfere in their life-and-death missions.
A less compassionate Grim Reaper is played by Lee Soo-hyuk, an actor always at his best when he plays someone diabolical. His character, Park Joong-gil has no qualms about escorting souls to hell and thinks that saving people from a suicide attempt is a waste of time. He considers suicide the worst mistake anyone can make, but humans do have choices. If that’s their choice, why not let them get on with it and decrease the surplus population. Obviously, he and Gu-ryeon are at odds.
One of the drama’s characters, played by Kim Hae-sook, notes that at least 40 suicides take place every day in Korea and that totals 15,000 lost souls every year. The drama explores the reasons someone might be driven to desperation and follows Gu Ryeon’s team as they attempt to help those who are suffering. Every case may have a different cause and they must puzzle out a person’s history to offer hope. Gu-ryeon and her team believe that those in distress deserve a second chance and some help in finding reasons to go on.
Kim Hee-sun is best known for her roles in the dramas Alice, Room #9, Angry Mom and Faith. SF9 member Rowoon was recently seen in The King’s Affection, She Would Never Know and Extraordinary You. Lee appeared in Doom At Your Service, Born Again and Valid Love. Yun Ji-un appeared in Jirisan, The Witch’s Diner and You Are My Spring.
Tomorrow is based on the webcomic Naeil by Ra Ma, which is published on Naver.
