Kpop Demon Hunters
Netflix
Despite the fact that Netflix has not confirmed that KPop Demon Hunters 2 exists, there is nothing more obvious on earth than the fact that it will be coming in the future. KPop Demon Hunters is about to become Netflix’s most-watched movie ever and a special theatrical showcase is about to win the weekend box office. That’s not even mentioning all the musical records the soundtrack has set.
But even though we don’t have KPop Demon Hunters 2 in the bag, director Maggie Kang has revealed she already has a plan for the story of the sequel. A sequel that would be part prequel, it seems. Here’s Kang speaking to EW:
“We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” Kang said. “What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?”
“There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show.”
“I think that was one of the hardest things we kept getting asked: ‘Please show us this.’ ‘I think the audience is going to want to know this or that,'” Kang said. “We just made decisions to be like, ‘Nope, that is not essential to this story for this movie, and maybe that can be shown some other time.’”

We know very little about the three girls in HUNTR/X, outside of the generational handing down of the demon-corralling responsibility of various musicians, now falling to the KPop band. We do also have a bit of backstory with Rumi, her demonic side and her mother, but not all that much. We know next to nothing about Mira and Zoey past their personalities.
It is certainly unlikely that the entirety of KPop Demon Hunters 2 would be a prequel, but there would be more time to flash back to some of these origins compared to the first film. Rumi actress Arden Cho has chimed in with at least her wish for a sequel story in which Rumi tries to save the possibly not-dead Jinu. Here’s her speaking to Variety:
“I would love to see if we can rescue Jinu! It is a magical world, right? I feel like the options are endless, and our incredible writers and directors left it a bit open. Anything is possible.”
The last we heard, KPop Demon Hunters’ directors are in negotiations with Sony about making another film, Sony who made the film and then sold the rights to Netflix. A trilogy, a live-action remake and even a stage show have been discussed, but it stands to reason the immediate focus would be on one more animated sequel. We will probably know more very soon.
