Boston – November 12: Boston Celtics guard Josh Richardson (8) drives past Milwaukee Bucks guard … [+]
The Milwaukee Bucks will be minimal players in free agency this summer due to their limited financial resources. However, they still have work to do to fill in their roster.
At best, the Bucks will have $5 million to spend via the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception on their own or an outside free agent. It’s important to note, f they use any of that money, they hard cap themselves at $182.5 million for the rest of the season. The only other tool they’ll be able to use is to sign outside free agents to veteran minimum contracts.
After looking at point guards the Bucks should target in free agency yesterday, we focus on shooting guards today. Most of these guys would need to consider the veteran minimum in signing with the Bucks for the above reasons.
Justin Holiday
The Bucks already have Jrue Holiday. I mentioned Aaron Holiday yesterday, so I might as well make it a Holiday trifecta and bring Justin into the fold as well. At 6-foot-6, Justin has more size than either brother while maintaining the same level of defensive intensity. He would not be a part of Milwaukee’s regular rotation, but he could be a cheap end-of-the-bench piece.
Matisse Thybulle
Matisse Thybulle is the only restricted free agent on this list due to the complications that status brings. If Portland offers him a qualifying offer, it would be worth $6.3 million, outside of the Bucks’ affordability, and giving the Trail Blazers the first opportunity to match any new deal he signs.
However, if they don’t offer him, Milwaukee should absolutely poke their head around. Thybulle is an elite defender with elite length, similar to the prospects the Bucks just drafted. He would be a tremendous addition on the wing, even if he’s a precarious offensive fit alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo due to his non-shooting.
Wesley Matthews
Wesley Matthews proved he still had something left in the tank last season. Then head coach Mike Budenholzer saved him throughout the regular season before using him in the postseason. He did a decent job on Jimmy Butler and can still knock down the occasional three-pointer. He’s a great veteran minimum candidate and locker-room presence.
Seth Curry
Seth Curry is the type of player the Bucks would’ve clearly targeted under Budenholzer. With Adrian Griffin now the head coach, it’s unclear if they still have the same level of interest. No matter, Curry would have to sacrifice financially to end up in Milwaukee, as he should be able to claim more than the maximum $5 million the Bucks can offer. He made at least 40 percent of his threes for the seventh straight season.
Will Barton
Will Barton took a big step back last year after being traded to the Washington Wizards. He didn’t show the same offensive scoring burst nor the intensity on defense. Those skills are probably still there, they just need to be rejuvenated on a championship contender. He made over $14 million last year and could easily acquire more than what the Bucks have to offer.
Alec Burks
Alec Burks is a sneaky-good player hitting free agency who should command a lot of attention. He averaged 12.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game last season with the Detroit Pistons while shooting 41.4 percent from behind the arc. He’s also 6-foot-6, possessing good size on the wing. His shot-making, playmaking and size on the wing would be an excellent fit in Milwaukee if they can somehow get him here.
Josh Richardson
Josh Richardson is another pipe dream for the Bucks, as he’s sure to command a salary much higher than what Milwaukee can offer. He’s a rough-and-tumble defender on the wing who has no issue going toe-to-toe with the best of them. He can also do just enough offensively to keep his defender somewhat interested in him and unable to sag completely off.
