At least six people died in a shooting early Sunday morning in downtown Sacramento, according to local police.

Key Facts

At least 10 more people were injured in the shooting and hospitalized, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester told reporters Sunday morning, without sharing any information on their conditions.

Earlier Sunday, the Sacramento Police Department tweeted it was shutting down an eight-square-block area due to a “shooting with multiple victims,” adding that the scene “remains active.”

When police responded to the gunfire at about 2 a.m., they discovered the six dead victims, according to Lester.

What We Don’t Know

It’s unclear if there were one or multiple suspects, Lester said, pleading for the public to provide any information. There are no suspects in custody.

Last month, five people died in a mass shooting at a Sacramento church. There have been 117 mass shooting incidents in the United States so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident with at least four injuries or deaths.
