3 Los Angeles Deputies Dead In Training Facility Explosion (Live Updates)

Topline

An explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training center killed at least three deputies Friday, prompting state and federal emergency agencies to respond as the cause of the explosion remains unclear.

Key Facts

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department called the explosion a “critical workplace incident” and said it occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. EDT, noting the area in which it happened is still an active scene.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the blast.

Aerial footage from KTLA 5, which said the incident is believed to be an accident, showed a sheriff’s department vehicle with a shattered windshield and a backpack near the department’s explosives trucks in the parking lot.

Although the cause of the blast has yet to be disclosed, the explosion occurred as the bomb squad was moving explosives, according to the Los Angeles Times, which noted the training center is home to the sheriff’s special enforcement bureau and the arson explosive detail, which includes the bomb squad.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed on the explosion and offered “full state assistance” to the sheriff’s department.
