As short-staffed airlines struggle with a surge in leisure travel with the coronavirus pandemic easing, 1,123 flights into and out of the U.S. were canceled as of 1 p.m. ET Friday and another 2,548 flights were delayed, according to the flight tracker FlightAware.

New York City’s LaGuardia was the hardest-hit airport with 96 canceled departures, 16% of the total scheduled for the day, and 104 canceled arrivals, 17% of the total, followed by Charlotte-Douglas International with 80 canceled departures (10%) and 120 canceled arrivals (15%), and Newark Liberty International with 75 canceled departures (11%) and 85 canceled arrivals (12%).
The airlines with the most canceled flights: American Airlines (240) and Delta (185).
American Airlines spokesman Curtis Blessing told USA Today the “vast majority” of the cancellations are “weather related.”
The disruption comes one day after 1,759 flights were canceled Thursday.

The cancellations come as airline fares continue to soar, climbing 16.1% last month, and up 38% from May, 2021.
