Vitalik Buterin Urges Ethereum to Focus on ‘Sanctuary Tech’

  • Vitalik Buterin says Ethereum cannot solve global problems despite blockchain’s growing influence.
  • Buterin admits Ethereum hasn’t improved lives as much as supporters hoped.
  • He warns that focusing only on finance will not address deeper societal and technological concerns.

Vitalik Buterin has shared an assessment of Ethereum’s role in today’s world, saying the technology cannot solve every global problem but can still help build systems that protect freedom and cooperation online.

In a detailed post, the Ethereum co-founder spoke about growing concerns many people have about the direction of global politics, technology, and digital life. He pointed to rising government surveillance, geopolitical conflicts, corporate control over online platforms, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence.

Ethereum’s Impact Still Limited

Buterin acknowledged that Ethereum has not yet delivered the type of real-world improvements many supporters hoped blockchain technology would bring.

According to him, the network has played only a small role in addressing major issues such as digital privacy, personal freedom, and community coordination.

“It does weigh on me that… Ethereum has been playing a very limited role in making people’s lives better,” Buterin wrote, speaking about the broader expectations surrounding decentralized technology.

He compared Ethereum’s progress with other tools that have had a clearer impact. Among the examples he mentioned were satellite internet systems like Starlink, encrypted messaging services such as Signal, and community-driven initiatives like Community Notes.

These technologies, he explained, have helped people communicate, access information, and maintain independence online more directly.

Why Finance Alone Isn’t Enough

Some voices within the crypto industry believe Ethereum should focus strictly on financial applications such as payments and decentralized finance.

Buterin said that the approach may overlook deeper problems. “A perfectly free and open financial system would fix some things,” he wrote, “but it would leave the bulk of our worries about the world unaddressed.”

For Ethereum to remain meaningful, he believes the ecosystem must participate in a broader effort to develop technologies that support autonomy and resilience.

“Ethereum Cannot Fix the World”

At the same time, Buterin stressed that blockchain networks have limits.

“Ethereum cannot fix the world,” he wrote, explaining that attempts to solve every societal challenge could require centralized power structures that contradict the principles of decentralization.

Rather than trying to rebuild global systems entirely, he suggested a more practical direction. Buterin described Ethereum’s role as part of an ecosystem building what he calls “sanctuary technologies.”

Creating Shared Digital Infrastructure

A central piece of Buterin’s vision involves using blockchain networks as shared digital infrastructure.

Unlike basic communication platforms that only allow people to send messages, blockchain systems can support persistent digital arrangements such as decentralized organizations, financial structures, and governance systems.

Ethereum, Buterin argued, should focus on building this open “digital space” that allows people and organizations to coordinate without a single owner controlling the system.
