Vitalik Buterin Proposes New Roadmap to Strengthen Ethereum Layer 2 Solutions

Ethereum’s future is poised for growth as Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has presented a transformative new roadmap aimed at significantly improving the security, scalability, and overall reliability of Layer 2 (L2) solutions.

With a deep commitment to Ethereum’s principles of decentralization and trustlessness, Buterin’s proposal is a careful blend of technical improvements and cultural evolution in the crypto space.

A New Approach to Network Security and Speed

The cornerstone of the new roadmap is the introduction of a multi-proving system where three different types of provers—optimistic, zero-knowledge (ZK), and trusted execution environments (TEE)—work together to validate transactions. This “2-of-3” model ensures that a transaction becomes final once two out of the three systems agree, significantly reducing the risk of vulnerabilities and bugs that could affect any one system. The result is a system that combines reliability, speed, and decentralization in a more balanced way.

Buterin’s perspective is especially important in light of the growing prominence of ZK rollups, which have been criticized for their reliance on similar code across multiple projects. This could cause massive disruptions if a single bug spreads. With the new multi-proof model, Ethereum could achieve near-instant finality (on par with ZK proofs) while also avoiding the risk of bugs affecting the entire ecosystem.

Scaling Ethereum: Stage 2 Rollups and Speed

Another highlight of the roadmap is the introduction of Stage 2 rollups, an upgrade to Ethereum’s scalability. These rollups will provide immediate transaction confirmation and strong finality, even in less trustworthy environments. Yet, these rollups will still be in line with Ethereum’s 30-day upgrade delay, ensuring that the network stays stable as new features are gradually integrated.

Shifting the Culture of Crypto Funding

Buterin also addressed the broader cultural shift required in the funding of cryptocurrency projects. While public goodsfunding has long been the norm, Buterin believes it has been over-politicized and often incentivizes popularity over substance. To combat this, he proposes a model of open-source funding, which focuses on transparency and real-world utility rather than optics or short-term success.

In his view, the current system of funding development is too influenced by social biases, rewarding those with the best community connections rather than those creating the most impactful tools. By adopting an open-source funding model, the Ethereum ecosystem could better allocate resources to projects that offer the greatest long-term value.

Ethereum’s Future: A Balanced Evolution

Buterin’s proposals lay out a dual-pronged strategy for Ethereum’s next phase: enhancing its technical infrastructureand revolutionizing how development is funded. The Layer 2 improvements aim to make ETH a faster, more scalable network, while the new funding model is designed to support projects that bring genuine long-term value to the broader crypto community. These changes reflect Buterin’s larger vision for a more decentralized, secure, and sustainable Ethereum network that can continue to foster innovation and inclusion in the years to come.

With these ambitious plans in place, ETH is setting the stage for major advancements in both technology and ecosystem governance, ensuring it remains a leader in the world of decentralized finance.
