Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, speaking at the Network State 2024 conference in Singapore on September 22, highlighted ongoing challenges in his “popup city” or “network state” initiative. He emphasized that overcoming governance and membership issues are crucial for the project’s feasibility. According to Buterin, the “network state” concept involves online communities forming physical communities to seek political autonomy. Although the idea resembles “science fiction,” Buterin stressed that fostering productive inter-relations between these communities is essential, as current social media tribalism offers a “zero-sum and ineffective” approach.
Buterin pointed out that while the popup city concept has market-fit products, key obstacles remain, particularly in effective management and cohesive membership engagement. He suggested that the project’s future success hinges on aligning diverse goals, promoting cooperation, and developing strategies for inter-community collaboration. “To advance, we must address governance and membership comprehensively. Even with differing objectives, enhanced collaboration and careful strategy are paramount,” Buterin concluded.
