In a move that signals a strategic evolution for Ethereum’s leadership and roadmap, Vitalik Buterin will be stepping back from day-to-day coordination and crisis response duties to focus more on research and long-term innovation, Ethereum Foundation Co-Executive Director Tomasz K. Stańczak announced.
Ethereum Foundation to Refocus on Vitalik Buterin’s Role as Network Upgrades Accelerate
According to Stańczak, the Foundation is deliberately dedicating more time for Buterin to explore Ethereum’s future frontiers rather than sticking to operational tasks. This shift comes as the network enters an ambitious phase of technical advancement.
Ethereum’s near-term development efforts currently focus on:
- Layer 1 scaling to improve core chain performance,
- Improved support for Layer 2 scaling solutions,
- Significant user experience (UX) improvements focused on interoperability.
These priorities will be realised through three upcoming major upgrades – Pectra, Fusaka and Glamsterdam – which the Foundation has previously said will accelerate innovations expected to arrive in three to five years.
“This new phase is about building faster, better, and more connected infrastructure,” Stańczak said. “By allowing Vitalik to lean into what he does best: deep technical thinking and visionary research, we are positioning Ethereum to not only scale, but to lead the next wave of Web3.”
The Foundation’s renewed focus on Layer 2 and cross-chain experiences aligns with the broader Ethereum ecosystem’s effort to maintain dominance in the rapidly evolving blockchain landscape, which now includes strong competition from modular and application-chain-first networks.
