Nasdaq has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requesting permission to allow Ethereum holdings in the iShares Ethereum Trust to participate in staking activities—a move that could mark a first for spot Ethereum ETFs.
Filed under Section 19(b)(1) of the Securities Exchange Act, the request seeks to amend current rules prohibiting staking and replace them with provisions enabling the trust to earn passive income through Ethereum’s proof-of-stake network.
The iShares Ethereum Trust, operated by BlackRock subsidiary iShares Delaware Trust Sponsor LLC, currently holds ETH in custody with Coinbase Custody Trust, while BNY manages its cash assets.
Coinbase also serves as the ETF’s primary broker.
The fund, which debuted on Nasdaq in May 2024, could become the first spot ETH ETF to offer yield through staking—pending regulatory approval.
