The decentralized protocols over blockchain networks are meant to get upgraded with time. One of the prominent DeFi organizations, MakerDAO, is also moving towards a highly anticipated ‘Endgame’ upgrade. In a recent development, co-founder Rune Christensen came up with the announcement to prefer the Solana codebase for a crucial portion of the upgrade.
In a submitted proposal, Christensen noted that the upcoming native chain of MakerDAO should build off the codebase of the Solana network.
The move to pick the Solana codebase instead of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) was unusual since the protocol has had a connection with Ethereum for a long time.
The creation of a native chain dubbed ‘NewChain’ is part of MakerDAO’s Endgame upgrade. The plan announced in May this year anticipates turning Maker Protocol into a full-fledged blockchain network.
In a Twitter post made on September 1st, 2023, Christensen emphasized the proposal, stating, “After conducting research, I am of the opinion that the Solana codebase should serve as the foundation for NewChain.”
Within the proposal on the MakerDAO forum, Christensen characterized Solana’s codebase as the “most promising” choice to investigate. He provided three significant reasons why he believes it should serve as the underlying framework for NewChain.
MakerDAO Co-founder Finds Solana More Compatible
In his proposal on the MakerDAO forum, he initially pointed out the “exceptional technical prowess” of Solana’s codebase, emphasizing its fine-tuned design for efficiently managing a single blockchain.
He noted that the Solana codebase has been meticulously engineered, benefiting from its development occurring after the complexities and obstacles of blockchain technology were well-established. This aligns seamlessly with NewChain’s core goal of addressing the technical shortcomings within Maker.
Secondly, Christensen made the case that the Solana ecosystem has demonstrated its durability by withstanding challenges such as the FTX incident and other adversities without collapsing.
Consequently, he, as the co-founder of MakerDAO, proposed that the Solana ecosystem is poised for long-term sustainability. It offers access to a “highly skilled pool of talent for Maker to tap into and collaborate with” while also offering a cost-efficient avenue for developing and sustaining NewChain.
Lastly, Christensen pointed out that since there are already instances of the Solana codebase being forked and modified to function as application chains, MakerDAO could employ a similar approach in creating NewChain.
Christensen acknowledged that although the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is crucial for creating user-centric applications, given its user base, it doesn’t align with MakerDAO’s specific backend needs.
