Linea, one of the largest layer-2 zkrollups of Ethereum, has finally announced the launch of the namesake crypto LINEA, accompanied by an airdrop to the community.

Since its launch on the mainnet in August 2023, the chain has experienced incredible growth and is now ready to take a fundamental step to decentralize its structure.

LINEA will be a governance token that involves individual holders in reaching shared decisions within the cryptographic ecosystem.

The launch of the cryptocurrency highlights the transition of L2 to a public domain network, in which users decide to contribute autonomously to its development.

To celebrate the big event, the parent company Consensys inaugurated the Linea Association during the Devcon event in Bangkok.

The autonomous organization will focus on the administration of the decentralized protocol, ensuring social and technical alignment.

As mentioned, the LINEA token will be launched with a crypto airdrop that will involve all those who have supported the chain since its inception.

Users, collaborators, developers, and investors will be at the center of the distribution plan for the new currency.

At the moment, no tokenomics have been described yet, so we do not know what percentage of the total supply will be allocated to the airdrop.

In the meantime, Linea celebrates the return of its TVL share to 1 billion dollars, after losing ground during the summer period.

We remember that the network has processed over 230 million transactions in just 15 months of life.

Still 4 months before the official launch: the Linea community complains

The execution of the crypto airdrop of Linea is expected, in conjunction with the TGE of the LINEA token, approximately at the end of the first quarter of 2025.

This means that for another 4 months we will likely not see any reward for the Linea community, already annoyed by the long wait that has passed.

In 15 months of mainnet, although there has never been explicit talk of airdrop, users have been invited to participate in a long series of initiatives.

They themselves expected an earlier launch, given that the other competitors ZKsync and Scroll have already debuted with their own crypto airdrop.

The community complains about “being farmed” and having spent excessive time and financial resources to participate in the airdrop.

Given the dilution of users who have interacted with the chain (800k active addresses at most), it is also likely that the rewards will be below expectations.

In any case, it is still early to make predictions, as there are no certain data on the extent of the airdrop and the value that will be given to the community.

Is there still time to participate in the LINEA crypto airdrop?

Although there are still 4 months before the debut of the new Linea token, it is probably too late to try to qualify for the airdrop.
