Ethereum Could Soon Run Twice as Fast Under New Slot Time Proposal

Ethereum may be on track for a major speed upgrade. A new proposal by core developer Barnabé Monnot suggests cutting the network’s slot time from 12 seconds to 6 seconds, effectively doubling block production speed and improving transaction throughput.

The proposal, outlined in EIP-7782, would reduce time across three critical consensus stages: block proposals to 3 seconds, attestations to 1.5 seconds, and aggregation to 1.5 seconds. Together, these changes would halve the time required to finalize each block, down from the current 12-second cycle.

While the idea remains in the discussion phase, it could be included in Ethereum’s upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, expected in 2026.

Developers caution that not all proposals move forward, but the concept reflects ongoing efforts to optimize ETH’s performance without sacrificing decentralization or security.

If implemented, the faster slot time could significantly improve user experience and DApp responsiveness, while strengthening Ethereum’s position against faster Layer 1 competitors.
