Steven Nerayoff has sued Covington & Burling, a law firm, for mishandling his defense. This dates back to 2019, when Steven Nerayoff was facing an extortion case. Steven Nerayoff, an early advisor to the Ethereum network, is now claiming that if representatives from the law firm had presented the clearly exculpatory evidence to the prosecutors in the fall of 2019, the case could have concluded sooner without any losses.
The case was extended until 2023, and only in May of that year were charges against him dismissed.
On September 18, 2019, authorities arrested and charged Steven Nerayoff for allegedly extorting a crypto startup. Nerayoff stated that he submitted all the evidence in June 2022, a year prior to the dismissal of the charges. The law firm came into the picture because Covington lawyer Alan Vinegrad had asked him not to turn over the negotiations videos, emails and messages.
All the pieces of evidence, according to Steven Nerayoff, were sufficient proof that their dealings were lawful.
The law firm has denied the allegations. Covington has vowed to defend itself vigorously in court. Steven Nerayoff asserts that the law firm withdrew its representation on January 10, 2020, following his indictment. That led him to spend more than a million dollars in legal fees and spend the next three years in the lawsuit.
An estimate of $100 million is not a precise one. Romeo Salta, Nerayoff’s current lawyer, stated that the trial will determine the precise amount, which would not be less than $100 million. This comes with a mention of all the businesses that Steven Nerayoff lost because of the lawsuit. This includes business engagements and contracts.
That is not the only case that Steven Nerayoff has decided to take up with his new lawyer. Steven Nerayoff is also suing the government and Tyler Fayard, also known as Boring Sleuth. He is suing the government for malicious investigation and prosecution. Nerayoff is suing Tyler for allegedly defaming him on social media.
Steven Nerayoff is looking to recover almost $10 million from Tyler.
In April, a lawsuit against the government was initiated, with a total value of $9.6 billion. On July 22, Tyler was the subject of a $10 million lawsuit.
Steven announced the development on X, stating that the defamation suit was a response to the serious and false accusations made against him, and that it also served as a clarion call to defend First Amendment rights from individuals.
That said, the native token to the Ethereum network has increased by 0.14% in the last 24 hours. At the time of writing this article, the value of ETH stands at $2,288.07. This reflects a drop of over 6% in the last 7 days and more than 12% in the last 30 days.
It remains to be seen how the lawsuits against the government, Covington, and Tyler turn out.
