Trump Might Be Shielded From Defamation Suit, Appeals Court Rules

A federal appeals court said a law shielding U.S. government employees from tort claims could potentially protect former President Donald Trump from a defamation lawsuit brought by a New York writer.

E. Jean Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, claimed in a 2019 book that Mr. Trump raped her in the dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in the 1990s. Mr. Trump, in various statements to the media, said Ms. Carroll had fabricated the incident to gin up book sales and that she wasn’t his type. Ms. Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit in state court in 2019 alleging Mr. Trump’s denials harmed her reputation.
