Along with his fellow teenager Pedri, Gavi changed the game for FC Barcelona on Sunday as they launched an epic comeback to beat Levante at home for the first in La Liga since 2018.

Head coach Xavi Hernandez again showed excellent in-game management by introducing the prodigies around the hour mark when the Blaugrana were already trailing 1-0.

In no time, they helped release Ousmane Dembele to bag his 11th assist of the season by firing in the cross that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang headed home to equalize.

Then, four minutes later, Gavi went on a slalom run down the right flank that Dembele would be proud of and set Pedri up for his third goal in five games as the Catalans took the lead.

Levante leveled themselves through their third penalty of the tie. And Gavi, earning plaudits for an excellent turn with the ball deep in the opposition’s half with his back to goal, came close to grabbing the winner in a tight one on one.

Hero of the hour plaudits instead went to Luuk de Jong with his last gasp bullet header at the death. But Gavi has still been the talk of the town for the personality showed in taking the bull by the horns, helping his team take home three points, and keeping them in the title race.

It is little suprise that Dani Alves recently described the youth as an incredible player with a “sensational competitiveness”. Every time he goes out on the field, the latest pearl from the La Masia academy gives it his all – which is sometimes a little too much considering the way he racks up yellow cards that have seen him shown red and miss important matches with suspensions.

If Xavi is to see his planned revolution at Camp Nou realized, however, Gavi is exactly the kind of soldier he needs to trudge forward.
