The death of Cash App founder Bob Lee has taken a new turn as details emerge about a possible motive involving the sister of the primary suspect, Nima Momeni.
The tech executive now faces charges of stabbing Lee to death in San Francisco after confronting him about his relationship with Momeni’s younger sister.
A tense confrontation precedes tragedy
On April 14, prosecutors revealed that on the day before the murder, Momeni questioned Lee about his connection to his sister and whether she was involved in drugs or other inappropriate activities.
Bob Lee, 43, assured Momeni that nothing of the sort had taken place. Investigators later discovered a FaceTime call between Lee and Momeni’s sister, along with a text message she sent to Lee, expressing gratitude for his handling of the situation with her brother.
The sister, who remains unnamed in court documents, is married, but her relationship with her husband is reportedly in jeopardy. It is still unclear whether she and Lee were engaged in an intimate relationship.
A tragic timeline unfolds
Surveillance camera footage from April 3 shows Momeni arriving at his sister’s apartment at 8:31 p.m., with Lee arriving about four hours later.
Both men were seen leaving the apartment roughly 30 minutes before the murder took place. The footage then captured the two men driving to a remote area where prosecutors believe the stabbing occurred.
Bob Lee was found wandering the city early on April 4, suffering from three stab wounds. He later succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital. Momeni, 38, the founder of Bay Area software company Expand IT, was arrested and charged with Lee’s murder on April 4.
During a brief court appearance on April 14, a judge postponed Momeni’s arraignment until April 25 and ordered him to be held without bail until then. San Francisco prosecutors described the murder as “planned and deliberate” in court papers filed for the hearing.
A close friend of Lee, referred to as “Witness 1” in court documents, recounted spending time with Lee, Momeni, and Momeni’s sister on the day before the murder. The sister and her husband both attended Momeni’s court hearing on April 14.
Bob Lee’s death has sent shockwaves through the tech industry, as his company Cash App, owned by Block Inc, has been a significant player in the mobile money transfer market.
The app allows users to send and receive money through their smartphones, positioning itself as an alternative to traditional banking services.
As the case continues to unfold, the spotlight on Momeni’s sister as a crucial factor in Bob Lee’s death raises questions about the circumstances that led to the tragic confrontation between the two tech executives.
With the arraignment scheduled for April 25, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on this shocking and tragic incident.
