‘Samrat Prithviraj’ Earns $8.4 Million In Two Weeks, ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ Bags $23.3 Million In Four Weeks

Akshay Kumar’s latest film, Samrat Prithviraj had had a dismal show at the box office and failed to live up to trade expectations. Released on June 3 and made on an estimated budget of $20 million, the film has earned $8.4 million in two weeks. The latest Hindi release, Nikamma, also proved to be a box office dud with a mere $0.193 million collection in India. Nikamma stars Shilpa Shetty, Shirley Setia and Abhimanyu Dassani.

Meanwhile, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, continues to score big at the box office, even in the fifth week of its release. The Kartik Aaryan-starrer has earned $ 23.3 million after the fifth weekend. Interestingly, Kumar faces failure at the box office, even as Aaryan celebrates the success of a film which is a standalone sequel to Kumar’s 2007 film, Bhool Bhulaiya. Interestingly, the film has already landed online and is the second most watched film/show on NetflixNFLX
India. The film was made on an estimated budget of $ 10 million.

Samrat Prithviraj had a disappointing opening at just $1.3 million in the Indian market. The film picked business over the weekend but managed to earn just $5 million in three days of the release in India. The film performed way below trade expectations and earned mere $5.7 million in four days of the release.

Based on court poet Chand Bardai‘s Hindi poem, Prithviraj Raso, the film is directed and written by Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi. The poem that praises Chauhan’s valour and bravery, is believed to be written by Bardai in the 13th century and completed by other court poets in the 16th century. The legend is that Bardai died with Chauhan during their battle with Mohammad of Ghor.

Filmmaker Dr Dwivedi is best known for the popular Hindi TV show, Chanakya, that aired on Indian TV channel, Doordarshan, through the early 90s. The filmmaker is known for his well-researched projects, but his latest movie does not live up to such expectations. Apart from many historians questioning the facts portrayed in the film, many critics also criticized Samrat Prithviraj for the usage of inaccurate language and architecture, among other things.

Meanwhile, Janhit Mein Jaari has also had a dismal show at the ticket windows in India. It earned $0.48 million in two weeks. The opening was also poor, at just $0.72 million on Friday. Starring Nushrratt Bharuccha in the lead role, the film traces the story of a woman who takes up the job of marketing and selling condoms in a small town where it is a taboo subject.
