ROH Star Jay Briscoe Shockingly Dies At 38 In Car Accident

Legendary Ring of Honor star, and ROH tag team champion Jay Briscoe (real name Jamin Pugh) sadly passed away in a car accident Tuesday night.

The Shore News Beacon reported “”four patients were trapped” in the fatal accident. The report noted there were two fatalities and “two critical patients” with one patient referenced as “pediatric.”

ROH owner Tony Khan confirmed the news. WWE NXT also announced Briscoe’s passing during the broadcast with Vic Joseph giving his condolences.

“Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” said Khan via Twitter several hours after Briscoe’s passing.

“Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family.”

“Rest In Peace Jamin.”

Despite a legendary career that spanned two decades, Jay and Mark Briscoe were arguably having their best run in recent years. The Briscoes and FTR rewrote tag team history with a Match of the Year contender at Final Battle 2021. The teams went on to compete in a highly bloody—highly entertaining—trilogy of matches, culminating in a Double Dog Collar match at Final Battle 2022.

The Briscoes were long-since considered one of the best tag teams in the world by hardcore wrestling fans. Their profiles grew as they gained exposure through AEW and Tony Khan’s purchase of ROH.

It’ll be interesting to see how AEW handles Briscoe’s passing less than 24 hours from AEW Dynamite. On short notice, AEW aired what many considered to be the greatest wrestling tribute show of all time to honor the life and legacy of Brodie Lee (Jon Huber) in 2020. Given the more sympathetic approach to the wrestling business from Tony Khan, it’s a safe bet that the promotion will properly honor Briscoe’s incredible legacy Wednesday night.
