Pedri’s New Number At FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona star Pedri has teased what his new number will be at the club.

The Golden Boy currently uses number 16, and started off wearing it in 2020/2021 when elevated to Ronald Koeman’s first team on the cusp of a breakout season.

Tied down to new terms in October 2021 until 2026, with a €1 billion ($1.16 billion) release clause, Pedri is the club’s future in midfield and has been tipped to become an all-time great not just with the Blaugrana but also in the sport in general.

While there is nothing wrong with his current number, with many big stars such as Frenkie de Jong taking those (21) that are not typical of the first XI, it has become known that Pedri – who has already been awarded the ’10’ for the Spain national team – would like ‘8’ at Camp Nou to follow in the footsteps of his idol Andres Iniesta.

That Pedri will receive the number next term has been teased by his new web domain, www.pedrigonzalez8.es, and the accompanying logo that also seems to boast an ‘8’ as indicated by Mundo Deportivo and Barca Universal.

In a recent interview with MD, the current owner of the ‘8’, Dani Alves, also revealed that he will have no problem with stepping aside and giving the jersey up amid rumors of Pedri’s interest.

“If he wants it, it’s his, but there is only one mission, we have to defend it well, because this shirt has been worn by great people, very special people, especially for me, like Iniesta or Hristo [Stoichkov] … they are people who have done a lot for this club,” Alves remarked.

“The numbers have to be defended and respected as they should be, they have a history behind them, for those who have honored this club,” Alves also said.

Of the youngsters in Xavi Hernandez’s squad including Gavi and Ansu Fati, Alves admitted that Pedri is the one that has impressed him the most and is on track to “mark an era” with the Catalans.

Currently out with a hamstring knock, Pedri will not return to action for Barca until 2022/2023.
