AEW Dynamite aired a vignette-heavy show with a few matches mixed in with one week until Jon Moxley defends his AEW World Championship against Jake Hager.
Multiple hype videos for the match were aired through the show while Matt Hardy challenged The Inner Circle to Elite Deletion as AEW dips its toe in the cinematic wrestling water.
The main event saw Cody defeat Shawn Spears in the quarterfinal round of the TNT Championship tournament.
Last week’s broadcast of AEW Dynamite garnered 685,000 viewers compared to WWE NXT, which drew 590,000.

Lance Archer def. Alan Angels
In addition to being an enhancement talent, the alliterative name of Alan Angels gave him next to no chance against a monster heel like Lance Archer.
Lance Archer needs to win this tournament.
Chris Jericho is already a Top 15 all-time color commentator just by his great work thus far.
Hikaru Shida def. Dr. Britt Baker
Does AEW realize that beating Britt Baker is only going to take away from what I originally thought was unlimited potential as a heel.
How many non-title matches is Hikaru Shida going to wrestle until AEW finally gives her the Women’s Championship Match she was promised?
One night after the return of The Facebreaker Nia Jax, Dr. Britt Baker is celebrating with a broken nose that will make this match impossible to criticize.
Jon Moxley vs. Jake Hager—Video Package
AEW aired a rundown of all the rankings in each division because of the current circumstances, but that should be a weekly routine regardless
Jake Hager’s coach Josh Rafferty claimed Hager is the only pro wrestler to do MMA and pro wrestling at the same time, so let’s hope Dan Severn wasn’t didn’t hear that.
Jake Hager’s wife essentially said their household motto is to either win or you don’t get to come home, which is the exact opposite of how championship matches or the playoffs work.
Jon Moxley has great delivery but each week it takes me no less than 30 seconds to forget what he just said and how it was different from the last tough-guy promo he cut. That vignette told me that Jake Hager is a far more layered character.
Kenny Omega and Michael Nakazawa vs. The Best Friends
AEW went approximately 30 minutes between matches here. NXT may be in good shape to take its first ratings win of the year.
Kenny Omega and Trent were wearing very similar gear. In fact, Michael Nakazawa was the only wrestler whose gear stood out in this one.
Shawn Spears is still looking for a tag team partner in a gimmick that is sure to keep him employed for several months to come.
Michael Nakazawa has a move called the “Hentai Slide.”
Chris Jericho brought up Kenny Omega’s well-known matches against a child and a broom stick, so let’s hope Jim Cornette didn’t hear that.
Brodie Lee Lectures His Minions on Their Wardrobe
This was one of those rare moments in the Wednesday Night Wars where NXT—currently airing a cinematic match—came off as the cool show.
If Brodie Lee lecturing his minions about why they should dress like stars is supposed to be a parody of Vince McMahon, it’s a questionable criticism to have.
Matt Hardy Announces The Elite Deletion
Matt Hardy announcing the Elite Deletion is going to be one helluva counter punch to WWE’s recently great cinematic pieces.
Matt Hardy has officially christened “The Inner Circle” as The Circle that is Internal. Also of note:
- Matt Hardy does not believe Sammy Guevara speaks Spanish.
- Matt Hardy referred to Proud and Powerful as “Loud and Devourful.”
- Matt Hardy thinks Jake Hager is Chris Jericho’s Frankenstein.
Brodie Lee def. Lee Johnson
AEW is the worldwide leader in intelligent giants.
Brodie Lee is yet another living, breathing reason why the TNT Championship tournament is way too small.
If Brodie Lee’s next program is against Marko Stunt, then poor Marko really is on his way to becoming the next Spike Dudley.
Cody def. Shawn Spears—Quarterfinal Match for the AEW TNT Championship
This match, and the last hour of this show, went head-to-head against Johnny Gargano vs. Tommaso Ciampa “One Final Beat.” I’ll be very curious to see the ratings for each.
Chris Jericho used Cody’s mother slapping him as an example of why members of the Rhodes family are so good at the comeback.
