Netflix’s ‘Your Place Or Mine’ Is Rom-Com Gold

Your Place or Mine is the perfect Valentine’s Day romantic comedy, and it’s coming to Netflix just in time on February 10.

The always adorable Reese Witherspoon portrays Debbie, a single mom who craves routine with her son in Los Angeles. Ashton Kutcher stars opposite Witherspoon as Debbie’s best guy pal, Peter.

Though the two are best friends, they are complete opposites. Counter to Debbie’s love of routine, Peter lives in New York, and he’s a man who thrives on the excitement of change.

Things get very interesting when they decide to try something new. Debbie and Peter decide to swap houses and lives for a week. This decision makes each realize that the way they’ve been living thus far might not be what they need to be happy.

This movie is pure fun! Have you ever wondered what would happen if you switched lives with your best friend? For Debbie and Peter, the plan changes everything, and they learn so much about one another that they never knew.

Though they have known one another for over a decade and have made it a point to stay in constant contact despite living on different coasts, they live opposite lives and see the world differently.

Debbie juggles life as a single mom with her career as an accountant. Her days are planned right down to the nanosecond. On the other hand, Peter is living in the Big Apple and working as a marketing executive with aspirations of becoming a successful writer. He lives fast and free and thrives on the unknown. His day-to-day life, including who he is dating, changes frequently.

Each has reasons for wanting to swap lives and responsibilities for only one week, but their lives are forever changed when they realize that maybe they haven’t been living the life that would really make them happy. Sometimes we do what we believe will bring us joy, but if we can get out of our own way, we can find the life we need to be genuinely fulfilled. As each sees life through the other’s perspective, they learn much more about one another, and their bond deepens.

The story comes from director-writer-executive producer Aline Brosh McKenna, who has a list of romcoms on her resume. She’s written classics such as The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, and Morning Glory. She also co-created Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with her friend Rachel Bloom, who appears in the film. She took inspiration from her own life for this one. The original idea came to her when she went to New York for work and stayed at a friend’s apartment who was quite the bachelor. The experience made her wonder what would happen had they swapped lives.

Your Place or Mine is a fun movie with a lot of heart. It makes you wonder if there’s another path to a better life. It brings to mind the classic 1989 film When Harry Met Sally. Harry and Sally were also in one another’s lives for years before they realized they were meant to be together.

Starring with Witherspoon and Kutcher are Jesse Williams, Zoë Chao, Wesley Kimmel, Griffin Matthews, Rachel Bloom, Shiri Appleby, Vella Lovell, Tig Notaro, and Steve Zahn. Alongside Witherspoon and McKenna, Ozark’s Jason Bateman serves as an executive producer on the film with Michael Costigan and Lauren Neustadter.
