Modern Warfare II’ And ‘Warzone 2’ Trailer, DMZ Mode, Al Mazrah Warzone Map And More Revealed

Activision and Infinity Ward revealed a ton of new info about both Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2.0 during today’s Call Of Duty: Next showcase.

Read on to find out all about the new maps, modes and gameplay mechanics you can expect in each game, plus more intel on the two-weekend Modern Warfare II beta as well as the long-rumored DMZ mode.

What’s New In Modern Warfare II

Modern Warfare II launches on October 28th.

New features coming to the game include 2-player co-op, swimming mechanics, 3v3 Raids, third-person playlists, vehicle gameplay and a revamped Gunsmith (read more about that last one right here).

Here’s the breakdown:

  • New gunsmith allows players to swap between weapons more smoothly than ever before while offering unprecedented opportunities for customization.
  • RICOCHET Anti-Cheat is built on a new unified security platform, giving Team RICOCHET more power to protect fair play and update more frequently than ever before with new features and mitigations to protect the game.
  • Special Ops is a revamped 2-player cooperative experience allowing you to explore large-scale hot zones with your fellow teammate.
  • New gameplay features and movement tactics include swimming/water combat, tactical sprint, dolphin dive, mantle and ledge hang for a true tactical edge.
  • New dynamic vehicle gameplay with all-new vehicles including enhanced destruction and more action-oriented maneuvers such as leaning out of vehicle windows, mantling onto a vehicle roof, destroying environments and more.
  • Third person playlists offer up more ways to play and a new tactical way to play multiplayer.
  • A whole new experience for the franchise, Raids will be coming later this year after launch. Raids will be 3v3 and focus on team communication and coordination like never before.

What’s New In Warzone 2

Warzone 2 launches on November 16th at the same time as Season 1 launches across both games. The new free-to-play Battle Royale shares an engine with Modern Warfare II and is designed with next-gen systems in mind, though both games are releasing on Xbox One and PS4.

The Map

Warzone’s new map is called Al Mazrah, a fictional desert map located in the Middle East (referred to by Activision as Western Asia).

DMZ Extraction Mode

On top of the Battle Royale mode, players can also play the new DMZ mode, a “sandbox experience” that goes live when the game launches. Earlier rumors had pinned DMZ to Modern Warfare II but it’s actually part of Warzone 2 so will also be free-to-play.

This is basically a PvPvE loot-and-shoot experience.

New Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 features on console and PC include:

  • A brand-new circle mechanic, as multiple circles appear changing end-game scenarios. Circles can split and multiple end-game circles can co-exist.
  • There will be bot factions.
  • Gulag 2.0, where players must battle it out via 2v2, loot for weapons and deal with “The Jailer,” for even more player options and surprises—basically 2v2 Gunfight where you team up with an opponent to defeat other opponents to get back into the match.
  • New social features for the community across the entire experience, with re- emphasized social connectivity.

What’s Coming To The Modern Warfare II Beta

The two-weekend Modern Warfare II will showcase large Ground War maps, several 6v6 maps and brand new modes. Here’s what to expect.

Large Maps

Ground War maps are part of the Al Mazrah map as Points Of Interests (POIs). During weekend one of the beta, players can jump into:

  • Sarrif Bay, an up to 32v32 map set in the Republic’s main port of call, home to the country’s valuable fisheries and where there is plenty of action on land, sea, and air.

Beta 6v6 Maps

During weekend one of the beta players can jump into the following core MP maps:

  • Valderas Museum is set in Spain, with very clean sightlines, easy-to-read thoroughfares, and modern architecture.
  • Farm 18 is a classified shoothouse-like location in the center of the map.
  • Mercado Las Almas is a small bustling marketplace with fast-paced routes and lanes that blend together that lead to pure, frenetic fun.

Beta Modes

Aside from the fan-favorite core modes like Team Deathmatch and Domination, the following three brand-new modes are scheduled during the Open Beta:

  • Knockout is a very fast, very tactical round-based 6v6 mode. Eliminate the opposing force or hold the package to win. No respawns. Teammates can revive each other.
  • In Prisoner Rescue, each 6v6 team has a prisoner to protect, held close to their spawn area. Locate the hostages and get them out alive or defend them at all costs. No respawns. Team revives are enabled.
  • In Invasion, crank up the mayhem in a massive Deathmatch of up to 32v32 set across sprawling maps. The goal is straightforward — eliminate or be eliminated — but the fighting is fraught and combines player-controlled Operators and AI combatants.

A two-weekend open beta kicks off tomorrow. Here are the start and end-times and everything you need to know.

Modern Warfare II & Warzone 2.0 Trailer

The above trailer gives us our first look at Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare II in action, followed by a short glimpse of the new Warzone and its desert map, Al Mazrah.

It’s a pretty good trailer—a mix of gameplay and cinematics that takes us on a tour of the various maps, guns and new items we can expect. I think my main complaint is that they used a good song—Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkins—to poor effect, dragging out its chorus until it felt needlessly repetitive.

Modern Warfare II launches on October 28th on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC via Battle.net and Steam.
