Maverick’ Leads Korean Box Office, Three Korean Films See Promising Results

Over the past week, Top Gun: Maverick took the lion’s share of the Korean box office, grossing US$12.9 million since its June 22nd release. Starring Tom Cruise and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the ParamountPARA
/Skydance film has captured 47.7% of the box office’s revenue share, with 1.52 million theatrical admissions.

Ranking second at the box office and coming out as the top Korean film is The Witch Part 2: The Other One. It had a $6.3 million weekly gross, for a total of $18 million at the box office, according to Korean Film Council data. The mystery thriller is a sequel to director Park Hoon-jung’s The Witch Part 1: The Subversion, released in 2018. In the week before the opening of Top Gun: Maverick, Park’s film had held top place on the charts.

The Roundup took third place for the week, still on its stellar run at the box office. With a total of 12 million admissions and a $96.9 million gross since its release, The Roundup became the first Korean film since Parasite (2019) to gain more than 10 million admissions. Pre-sold to 132 countries ahead of the domestic release, The Roundup is a sequel of The Outlaws (2017), which also stars Ma Dong-seok and Choi Gwi-hwa.

Red-hot Cannes favorite, Broker, sits in fourth place in the Korean box office for the week, grossing $9.4 million so far. Broker was written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and boasts Song Kang-ho, Bae Doona and Gang Dong-won as its cast members. At the Cannes Film Festival, the film won the Ecumenical Jury Award. Song Kang-ho also became the first South Korean actor to win Best Actor in the festival’s history.
