‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ Dominates Oscars

Topline

The 95th Academy Awards aired Sunday, marking the conclusion of award season as some of the best actors, film industry professionals and movies of the year were honored, as indie film Everywhere Everything All At Once triumphed during the ceremony.

Key Facts

Everything Everywhere All At Once was the most nominated film, with 11 nods, and took home seven trophies, including Best Picture and Best Actress—more than any other film.

All four acting winners—Michelle Yeoh, Brendan Fraser, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan—earned their first Oscars during the ceremony; 16 nominees were first-timers.

Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win Best Actress, was presented her award by Halle Berry, the first Black woman to win the trophy.

Host Jimmy Kimmel inevitably cracked a few jokes about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during last year’s ceremony, but it wasn’t the main focus of his time on stage.

Key Background

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show—last year, when Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall hosted, was the first time since 2018 the show had official hosts. The program featured performances of some Best Original Song nominees, including from Rihanna (“Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), and Lenny Kravitz will sing during the In Memoriam segment. Last year’s ceremony was overshadowed when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock, who joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, when presenting an award. Will Smith was banned from attending the ceremony for 10 years. Still, the incident is likely to be referenced at this year’s ceremony. The CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Bill Kramer, said the group has implemented a “crisis team” to handle surprises at the event going forward. Typically, Oscar voters ignore blockbuster films when it comes to Best Picture. But this year, three were nominated for the top prize: Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way Of Water and Elvis.
