Evacuation Of Civilians From Mariupol Steel Plant Continues, Nearly 100 Set To Arrive In Ukraine-Controlled Territory Today

Topline

The evacuation of Ukrainian civilians from the besieged Azovstal steel plant in the port city of Mariupol—now under Russian control—is set to continue on Monday as a convoy carrying 100 evacuees from the plant is set to arrive in a Ukrainian-held city, a sign that a ceasefire by Russian forces to allow a humanitarian corridor appears to be holding after two months of intense fighting in the strategically key city.

Key Facts

According to Ukrainian officials civilians who were holed up inside the Azovstal plant along with the last remaining Ukrainian fighters in the city began evacuating over the weekend and others people in the city are set to leave on Monday, the Associated Press reported.

Around 100 of the evacuees—mostly women and children—are set to arrive in the Ukrainian-controlled city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday morning, Zelensky said in his daily video address.

Footage of Sunday’s evacuation showed Ukrainian fighters evacuating several women and small children climbing over heaps of rubble and boarding a bus along with Red Cross volunteers.

In a post on Telegram, Ukrainian deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said hundreds of civilians still remained trapped in the plant and were facing a “humanitarian catastrophe” as they are running out of water, food and medicine.

This is a developing story.
