DOJ Will Review Police Response To Texas School Shooting

Topline

The Department of Justice will review law enforcement’s response to Tuesday’s elementary school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the agency announced Sunday, after local police were criticized for not quickly confronting the shooter.

Key Facts

The review aims to offer an independent account of law enforcement’s actions on the day of the shooting, and will identify lessons for first responders preparing for future active shooter incidents, DOJ spokesperson Anthony Coley said in a statement.

The review was requested by Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin and will be carried out by the DOJ’s Office of Community Oriented Policing, Coley said.

The announcement came two days after Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steve McCraw said local police made the “wrong decision” when they delayed breaching the classroom where the Uvalde shooter was barricaded, a decision for which McCraw said there was no excuse.

Tangent

Police at the school believed the shooter was no longer active, and they had time to wait for tactical teams to arrive and for a school janitor to bring keys to the classroom, McCraw said. However, 911 calls indicated that students were still alive in the classroom.
